ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Originally from Traverse City, Mich., Justin Hayward (b. 1980) now lives in Casper, WY with his wife, daughter, and French bulldog. Hayward studied Illustration at Brigham Young University and earned his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2005. He also finished a course at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy in the summer of 2005. Hayward is currently the full-time drawing and painting instructor at Casper College.

Hayward’s art training started early and has been very diverse. “Throughout my academic career, I have studied at many schools and privately with many renowned artists who have taught me different techniques and presented new ideas, and my work is representative of this.” In addition, he has learned a tremendous amount by copying paintings and drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

It was while completing his MFA in New York that Hayward caught the attention of galleries, competitions, and clients throughout the U.S. In the last year he has painted commissioned portraits, large scale figurative pieces, landscapes, and still lifes for clients such as CEO’s in New York City, The National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City, and many group exhibitions. Hayward was a commended artist for the 2006-07 National Portrait Gallery portrait competition.

Hayward currently is painting landscapes for Atlanta Art Gallery. “I have been concentrating on the figure for these last few years and it has been exciting and challenging to dive into landscape painting. I enjoy studying Old Master paintings and applying their techniques in my contemporary work.”
